Illuminas present paper at Marketing Week Retail Financial Services Conference 2009
John Connaughton, CEO Illuminas presented a paper entitled ‘The Hybrid Consumer – discretional spending priorities – An international perspective’.
The paper outlines how consumers have changed their behaviour in a downturn across the UK, USA and China. A study was commissioned in all three countries in January 2009 and explored consumer attitudes to spending and saving, future economic outlook and how spending priorities may change over the next year. A sophisticated advanced paired comparison technique was used, called MaxDiff to rank 24 ONS categories of expenditure (including many financial categories). The paper identifies the top five spend priorities over the next 12 months and contrasts the differences between countries taking into account cultural and contextual issues. In addition, it identifies some key points for the banking sector to consider as a result of these findings.
